If you have never engaged an outside IT firm, the industry can feel opaque. There are essentially two service models, and they run on opposite philosophies.
Break-fix is reactive: you call when something breaks and pay for the time. Managed services is proactive: a flat monthly fee for continuous monitoring, maintenance and support. This lays out how each one actually works, when each makes sense, and what you give up either way. Both are legitimate. They suit different businesses.
